Living Independently Group Offers in-Home System to Alert Caregivers of Potential Problems of Seniors Living Alone

NEW YORK, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Summer heat waves are just one of the dangers faced daily by seniors living independently. Besides temperature extremes in the home, falls, inconsistent medication use and dehydration are some of the problems that can cause a senior's health to decline.

The QuietCare(R) system, developed by Living Independently Group, detects these problems early with a nonintrusive system of wireless activity sensors. http://www.quietcare.com/

"We believe QuietCare is a solution to keep seniors safe while maintaining their independence. It is also a way of caring for the whole family because it provides peace of mind for family caregivers," said George Boyajian, Ph.D., Executive VP of Research and Development for Living Independently Group.

QuietCare uses a series of wireless sensors placed throughout the home to monitor normal patterns of daily activity. The system analyzes the data and creates a customized alert if there are changes in activity. Caregivers or emergency services are notified as appropriate.

"Remarkably, the equipment needed in a single residence is small. The sensors are no more than the height of a deck of cards, and the communicator about the size of an average book," said Boyajian. "The size of the product is small but the potential value is enormous when considering the impact it can have on a senior's health."

QuietCare detects several of the most common problems that lead to hospitalizations for people over 65. The system sends an emergency alert if someone doesn't exit the bathroom within 60 minutes which may indicate a fall. Early detection of falls can help prevent complications that lead to hospitalizations and the loss of independence.

Medication use is another important behavior that the system monitors. Noncompliance with medication causes more than 10% of the hospitalizations for people over the age of 65. QuietCare detects this problem early so that caregivers can intervene before a health crisis.

While the system is comprehensive in its capacity to detect problems affecting a senior's well-being, installation is simple and typically takes no more than a few hours. QuietCare is also affordable, with monthly fees that are less than what the typical consumer spends on cable television. http://www.quietcare.com/ 800-658-6939
