dLife Issues Statement on Important Travel Information for People With Diabetes
dLife Issues Statement on Important Travel Information for People With Diabetes

WESTPORT, Conn., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to numerous questions from the diabetes community, dLife today issued tips on traveling by air with insulin and other diabetes medication.

On Thursday, August 10th, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the national security level to High (Orange) for all U.S. commercial flights. In addition, new travel restrictions have been put in place -- including a ban of all liquids, gels, lotions, and creams of any kind in carry-on luggage. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), all necessary medications, including insulin, are exempt from this ban. Prescription medications should be labeled as such, and the name on the label must match the name on the passenger ticket. In addition, dLife suggests that if a person with diabetes is traveling with an insulin pump, they should carry a letter from their physician on letterhead explaining what the device is and why it should not be disconnected.

"Keep insulin vials and pens in their original packaging and let security personnel know you have diabetes and are carrying insulin and testing supplies," suggested Paula Ford-Martin, Managing Editor of dLife. "It's important to give yourself adequate time to get through security. And call your airline before traveling to check on any additional restrictions that may be imposed at the carrier level. This is a developing situation and dLife will continue to stay on top of the latest air travel requirements at http://www.dlife.com/."
