By Land or By Sea

Sure you can reach Mystic, Connecticut, by taking Interstate 95 to Exit 90. But as long as you’re heading for one of the great maritime capitals of the Northeast, why not consider arriving by boat—via the Mystic River? Navigating the twists and turns as you make your way up the winding waterway from the Long Island Sound will set the mood for your visit. After all, seafaring folk have sailed in and out of the area for hundreds of years—way before the advent of highways. And Mystic’s still very much a maritime town, with much of present day life focused on the river.

The northernmost coral island, Bermuda lies in the Atlantic Ocean, just 650 miles east of North Carolina ? and actually closer to New York than to the Bahamas.
Sail into Carnival

Carnival. Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday. Lundi Gras. Shrove Tuesday. Fastnacht. Fettisdagen. Uzgavens. All are names synonymous with the weeks of partying leading up to Lent. And while many people think of New Orleans as the Mardi Gras capital of the world, celebrations in Nice, Venice, Rio, and throughout the Caribbean may be equally deserving of the title. Here?s what some of the world's most popular seaside locations have planned for this year's Carnival.

Monaco Yacht Show 2005 Live Coverage - SS Delphine She's a Lady

Most captains display a certain affection for their vessels, but Norwegian Captain Morton Hansen speaks of the 258ft SS Delphine as if she were a paragon, describing her as though she were an elegant, refined woman of whom he's enamoured, and one for whom he shows the utmost respect. 'She's a lady,' Hansen says emphatically. 'Treat her right, and she will give back.' And indeed she has. The opulently appointed steam yacht has responded well to a lengthy restoration process that has both brought her up to today's standards and revived the beauty and glamour of her past.

A Flair for Food - Health-Conscious Cooking Is This Chef's Cup Of Tea

A third-generation chef takes advantage of her alternative training to carry out her talents on a midsize sailing yacht. Strong breezes met us on our way out of the Yacht Club Marina in Antigua. Although dark clouds portside indicated rain in nearby Montserrat, our afternoon of comfortable sailing onboard the 2004, 82ft Oyster Darling was free of bad weather. A young crew with two Olympic sailors raised the sails with a thrilling thwack and steered from the double helms as drinks and light snacks were served. We skimmed across the waves, with a cool spray on our faces, headed towards a little deserted bay said to be a favorite hideaway for crew members. Once there, several guests dove off the boat and swam, while others took advantage of the snorkeling gear and explored the crystal clear waters.

Obsession with the Sea

Once a favorite haunt of pirates, and the setting for Treasure Island, the riches in this area of the West Indies now lie in abundant coral reefs and unpopulated islands accessible only by boat. When I was able to tear myself away long enough to return to the tender of the 85ft Hatteras, Obsession, I removed my snorkel and asked Captain Gene Costa about the source of the noise. He told me it was the sound of the vividly colored, multistriped parrotfish chewing on the coral. In fact, he said, their teeth are designed for just that purpose. I resumed my drifting, facedown in the 86-degree turquoise sea, this time focused on spotting the culprits. I suddenly came upon a whole group darting in and out of the reefs: stoplight parrotfish with brilliant stripes of turquoise, purple, green, pink, and blue, with a yellow band on their tails.
